What this skill is

Quantity words describe how much, and most of them are relative rather than fixed - "a lot" of raisins is a different number than "a lot" of elephants. Children usually get the extremes first, because all and none are absolute, and settle the middle terms later. "More" arrives very early because it is enormously useful.

What to expect

A very common pattern is treating "some" as though it means "all", and another is using "more" for any increase at all, including quality ("more good"). Both are ordinary. The comparative pairs (more/less, many/few) are genuinely harder, because they require comparing two amounts rather than judging one.

Try this at home

Snack time does this for free, and the child has real motivation to get it right. Offer choices: do you want all of them or some of them? Who has more? Then make it fair. Any activity where the answer matters to the child beats a worksheet.

When to refer

No use of more or all by about 3, or cannot judge which of two sets has more by 4;6.
